The setting of any work of fiction can only have the atmosphere imposed on it by the author. The island of Ios, which provides the setting for Fantasy Land, is a lively place one can visit and discover for himself. These photographs were taken at the time the book was written.
The port area of Ios. You can see the catamaran leaving port
The Village. It faces inland so it wouldn’t be visible from pirate boats at medieval times
The "desert" where Burt first met Charlotte. The white patch on the right is the Village
The path to Homer’s tomb
Homer’s gravestone. Note the simple offerings of visitors on the slab and the rugged coastline below it
The four churches and the solitary palm tree at the top of the Village
The footpath where Burt met Charlotte painting, and the subject Charlotte painted and Burt photographed
The beach of Milopotas and the clubs. The camping area is off to the right
The real palm tree. On its trunk Burt found a heart painted with his and Charlotte’s initials
The courtyard of St. Anargiri where a bird gets eaten and a snail crawls
The theatre where Ios festival takes place. Milopotas beach is visible in the distance
I wish I had a lighthouse to show but certain places can only be described in words and dwell in our imagination. Sorry.
